Tobago's Davis Cup trio give creditable showingTrinidad and Tobago Davis and Fed Cup Junior teams that boast three and two Tobago players respectively were knocked at the group stage of the North Central American and Caribbean Davis and Fed Cup pre-qualifying tournaments. The tournaments were staged in the Dominican Republic and concluded last Saturday. The three Tobago players in the Davis Cup team were Elan Mendez and the Abraham twin, Ty and Joshua and they gave a much better showing than the girls' team whose Tobago players were Dejohnique De Lanser and Kezia Koroma while the Trinidad player was Juliet Campbell. The Davis Cup team won one and loss two matches while the Fed Cup team lost all their matches without any player winning a single game, being shut out 3-0 in each of their three matches. The Davis Cup team defeated Haiti 3-0 in their opening game while they lost to Nicaragua 2-1 and suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss against Honduras that they needed to win to advance to the knockout stage. Against Honduras, they got a flying start when Joshua Abraham crushed Roberto Aviles 6-1, 6-0 but the #1 player Elan Mendez then lost to Honduras' #1 player Julio Duron 6-3, 6-4 that set the stage for a deciding match in the Doubles. Joshua then joined his twin Ty for the Doubles in the decider. They lost the first game of the set 6-3, rebounded with a 6-2 victory and then lost a thriller at 7-5 in the deciding game. |
