Tobago players take charge of RBTT Tobago

Davis Cup player Yohansey Williams won his fifth consecutive title for 2010 as he led the Tobago charge in dominating the RBTT Tobago Open Tennis Championships that culminated at the Shaw Park Lawn Tennis facility, Shaw Park, last Sunday.

The Tobagonians won 12 of the 17 titles at stake, shared two, surrendering just three, the Women A, Under 18 and Under 14 titles.

Tobago had complete control of the male divisions while the Trinidadians enjoyed some success in the female divisions.

Williams who is yet to lose in Trinidad and Tobago since his return from injury in January 2010 made light work of Adrian De Silva who had a miserable tournament, losing in all three finals he competed in.

Williams cruised to victory at 6-3, 6-0 in the Men A final against De Silva.

De Silva who had stunned Vaughn Wilson in the Men A semifinal to reach the final could not mirror his performance in the Under 18 final as Wilson exacted his revenge to win the title.

De Silva had beaten Wilson in a marathon thriller in the semi-final earlier in the day that lasted two and a half hours, forcing the organisers to play the Doubles final which De Silva had also advanced to, on Sunday, in order to give him a rest.

However, on Sunday De Silva in tandem with Denoon also lost the Doubles final to Wilson and United Stated based Davis Cup player Liam Gomez.

Juanaldo and his brother Jalon Greig were the champions in the Under 12 and 14 Singles, respectively. Juanaldo defeated Joshua Arnold 4-1, 4-0 in the final while Jalon outplayed Keegan De Silva.

Juanaldo then teamed-up with Curtis De Silva but lost in the Junior Doubles final to Jabari Lewis and Nkrumah Patrick at 2-6, 7-5.

Raye-Anne Sandy who only recently returned from a one-year hiatus lost to United States-based player Kandis Legall in the Under 18 final and Women semifinal. However, she did not walk away empty-handed as she later teamed-up with Breanna Stampfli and enjoyed a measure of revenge against her conqueror, Legall, on the Singles as they defeated Legall and Trevine Sellier 6-3, 6-3 in the final.

Joshua Abraham defeated Junior Richards 6-1, 7-5 to capture the Men B Singles title, while Xavier King was the Over 45 champion.

Kayeem James won the Novices Boys Under 10 title, while James' brother Elon triumphed in the Under 14 Division and Tamara Drakes won the girls' version.
