Providence, Burnett set stage for victory

Signal Hall Secondary School opened their 2012 campaign in the National Schools Cricket League competition on a high note at the Shaw Park recreational facility, last Thursday.

The team that is now coached by Brian Brown gave a superb performance to totally outplay Manzanilla Secondary before a sprinkling of spectators at Shaw Park.

Batting first, Signal Hill totalled a massive 280-6 as their batsmen enjoyed the Manzanilla School's bowling. Openers Antonio Providence who had a 'Man of the Match' performance and Ashworth Burnett set the stage with a stand worth 92 runs.

Providence were in ripping form, falling one short of a half century for 49 runs whilehis partner was four short as he lost his wicket when he was on 46 runs. Any hopes the Manzanilla bowlers harboured that the breakthrough would have shifted the momentum in their favour was quickly dashed with the appearance of the talented and hard-hitting batsman Kelon roach.

He stroked a breezy 85 n.o that included two sixes and four fours before their allotted 50 overs ran out.

In reply, Manzanilla though making a spirited attempt were never in the hunt, folding for 169 runs. Providence were the main destroyer, sneering four wickets for18 runs from 8.3 overs while Renneson Scotland and Keon Roach claimed two wickets each. The commanding victory propelled them to the pole position on the standings, a position they will be hoping to holdon to for the rest of the season.

The team returned to action earlier in the week against Barataria Government Secondary and willplay their third game in the tournament on Wednesday.
