Woman pleads for dead child

By Elizabeth Williams

Ann Lynch, 20, of Mason Hall Tobago is peeved with officials of the Scarborough Regional Hospital, following the death of her baby on February 25.

She is now in the process of taking legal action against the hospital. Lynch is blaming hospital officials for the death of her baby. She checked into the Scarborough Regional Hospital on Carnival Tuesday and all reports were well. However, she expressed dissatisfaction with the treatment meted out to her during her stay.

"While I was up there I was in pain. I keep on telling the nurse I in pain, and they just ignoring me right through. I was telling them that I bleeding, they saying that is normal," Lynch said.

On that Saturday, things took a turn for the worse. During checks by medical officials to ensure the mother and baby were fine, things went downhill from there, as the baby's heart beat was found to be irregular.

"From the time they rush me upstairs inside the theater to cut me, and take out the baby. The baby had already died," Lynch cried.

Lynch told Tobago News she was not notified when the autopsy on her dead baby would take place. She was however, told by hospital officials the autopsy would take a month to be completed. She was also advised by officials to visit the mortuary to seek further information on the whereabouts of her baby.

"I have not signed no papers stating to do the autopsy and they did the autopsy without calling me and letting me know, and on top of that they burn the baby. I need justice, "she said.

She later received a death certificate which was stamped officially by pathologist Hubert Daisley. She said she is receiving no clear word from officials on the matter.

Communications Manager at the Tobago Regional Hospital Debbie Ann Bailey was notified of the incident, and said we would be notified as soon as any information comes to hand.

I dont know there this batch of Nurses come from ,they are noncaring,,My Daughter was visiting for a familymembers wedding when she startedhaving pains ..she was pregnant, she went to the casualty the nurses gave her an injection and sent her to pass some water in the bathroom..how can you give a pregnant woman an injection without even doing a sonogram..whe passed out the baby in the bathroom and these unfeeling people wrapped up the dead baby in a blanket and put it beside her on the bed for about three hours with her and they were actually seen laughing at her ..this ordeal has left her very traumatised sshe had to go back to school that is why she has not sought to take any legal action also her husband thought that the family would be victimised should they have to go to the hospital ..Totally Unacceptable, something has to be done about these non caring batch of nurses. My daughter remains traumatised,

As a Tobagonian i am angry and appalled at the treatment ,and disrespect given to clients. Its time for Tobago to start firing people, who feels all too secure in their jobbs, and start employing those who really want to be their. Its no longer just enough to have an education, while hiding behind the lack of respect for humancare. We need to do something about it and fast.I could say that the outside world is not much better, you do also have to wait hours, but thats not the issue at hand. Its the direction Tobago is seeming to take.As our national athemn says, this our native land ,we pledge our life to thee,we need to put new meaning of these words into propper use.Our as a people we have forgotten who we are.Dont just protest for money, protest also for human dignity.

That's why I live in the USA. From the Time my wife went into labor to the Time of Delivery a Nurse was always in the room checking the Status of the Baby on the machine. Its very expensive but it's worth it. The difference between Payed for and Social medicine is clear! Social medicine IS A BOO !!!

It has nothing to do with social medicine, its about emphaty for another human beign in distress,we know that in America if you dont have the money, you are treated worse than a dog with flees,so i prefer Tbago hospital, where all is treated equal, the workers and the Goverment just needs to get their act together.

You are wrong: You don't need an appointment for an emergency and a hospital cannot turn you away for that matter, its illegal for them to do that. In America you don't get warded you get your own room with TV shower and Bath if its a busy hospital then you may share with one other person. If you cannot pay then social benefits kick in once you prove you cannot pay. This incident would not happen in the USA for fear of being sued. There are studies that show that social medicine breeds delays with sometimes deadly consequences...In England there are reports of Babies being born on the floor because a nurse is not available for whatever reason. In Canada you have to wait 6 month to get an important surgery. In Trinidad and Tobago how many have died because of Doctor cannot be reached and nurse too Busy doing Nothing !

So its the fears of beign sued that keeps the hospital in the US intakt ,thats of cause if you have the money to take them to courts. The point i am making is that it has nothing to do with social medicine. Its about service beign rendered as should in every, given situation when you arrive their.Something is causing the lack of emphaty ,to make this happen. If the staff is frustrated whats causing it,Genuine care and service breeds good service, with little or much, once respect is given. Why are staff so uncaring thats the issue at hand. Not social medice. The proplem is they do not have enough doctors employed, and one person available to checkin a large no. of people.Nurses are not using their education to help, for simple solutions, they still wait for a doctors order. When things are not balanced correctly .their would always be chaos.

Social medicine is not the cause of uncaring nurses. Many of them are educated to take care of basic cases, which arrives at the hospital. But they are not used effectively, instead they sit around waiting for orders,by doctors. This is a misuse of time and bad organisation. Then you have one person checking in dozens of patients,And only one our two doctors available. That is very ineffective. If the ability to sue a hospital ,is what keeps them on pins, good for them. But i rather Tobago take a different direction, and employ those who wish to be their ,and give the proper service necessary.Thats a hospital to be proud of.So in the end America ,does deal with social medicine ,when people cant afford, and the service is still excellent as you said.So once again the problem is not social medicine. Its 1- Bad use of education-2 Bad organisation -3 understaff-4 and blindness to the proplems, which needs changing. The list can go on and on.Does it not get lonely lying in a room all alone for weeks.

You Below: You have proven my point! and that statics show that private hospitals in Trinidad do not have these issues. When comparing the biggest social medicine economies in the world one thing is common "POOR SERVICE" "DELAYS" "LACK Of RESOURCES" "APATHY" !You get what you pay for! Yes medical practice is expensive in the USA but once you check in to Hospital you have a nurse and doctor 24-7 attending to you. When I call the emergency service they are there within 2 Minutes performing basic care and the cops are there within 60 seconds, a helicopter is there within 20 min if necessary...All these people have to get paid ! and that's way medicine in expensive in the USA but it worth it !

So in basic English, what you are saying is that the poor in Trinidad, does not have a chance to any kind of good hospital service. And that private sectors are for the rich.Do we really want to promote a world where your only value,is the amount of dollars you have in your pocket. Its saying if you are black you should not be seen in certain areas in America. Its definietly not a racist comment, but a simply comment to express what i am trying to say clearly. We have a goverment who has certain responsabilties towards the people,When every citizen is appreciated and valued for whichever field of work he-she undertakes and is beign paid as the rich who can afford, then you can talk about a fair exchange in privatisering of Hospitals. The fact is people im US who has less service, recieves poore service,to say otherwise refuse to see the truth,to justify your point. Which area in Us do you live is that not another factor which decides the service rendered.

If money is the driving force for care and emphaty, the world is going into the wrong direction, and hearts becomes mechanical.Because every-thing would be buildt according to the colour of your skin, the area you live in,the cycle is damaging for any economy and self-worth of every citizen. It builds negative discrimination, which is already rampant in US.i WOULD ALWAYS CHOOSE GENUINE care any-day over pretensive service.that way i know when i am down, they would stand by me,instead of helping to kick me down,as we well know has become a norm in US.If you can honestly say, that a poor person living in a less fortunate area can get the same service you mentioned, then your argument has value.Otherwise its just words, painted to look beautiful, but filled with an onconcerned onsympathetic onpatriotic care for your fellow neighbours.

I c your problem, you are and idealist! WHat you ask for will never happen in this world. "...Reality is what reality is!" Greed and Money is the name of the game in this world ! I don't know what kind of world you live in. Let me explain the Hospitals in America ! I will be brief! in the 80s they were going broke, burdened by increase cost of healthcare and reduction in Government funding; It was make or break for the remaining Hospitals. They stared recouping money from private insurance and private insurance raised the premiums on the customers "Citizens". Peter Pay for Paul system was enacted for hospitals in Poor areas. The get Taxes and some of the money is given to Poorer areas hospital plus various innovative methods like donation and Not for profit organization chip in to help. If a "Rich" person is admitted to a hospital in a poor area the class of service is upgraded To match any hospital. So in essence there is no such thing as rich hospital poor hospital.

...so the difference is not the hospital the difference is the level of health coverage the individual has. A rich person is Stabilized and admitted to the IC Unit for extra test scans etc etc etc billz pill up, insurance pay and hospital happy. If you have no medical coverage You are Stabilized and sent home ASAP...No extra test no extra scans no extra care! T&T NIB is a Joke, They don't collect nearly enough money to operate like you want the to ! Sorry that is reality of your medical system.

It is the responsibility of every country, which have a governing head,to provide the best health-care service to every individual citizen regardles. And thats one of the reasons, why Tobago should not rush into US LIFESTYLE but effectively build on what they already have, until better can be done. This emboddies solid, intelligent, God-fearing,stable humans ,who values the life itself. It is the responsibility of the Goverment to generate the resouces necessary to keep the boundaries and balances intakt-otherwise they become a failing protector of its people-"uneducated,and unaware of how to meet the demands and rights of every citizen."You mentioned that gGoverment funding in the 80s dissapeared.Which means they were stealing the peoples money, instead of doing ,what they were paid for.thank god that martin luther king did not believe in your theory and remained a realist so that you could live in the freedom of his realistic world. So i am in great company. Is realstic a problem our solution.

There are no Social medicine program in existence in this world is as good as a private program. That is the reality. If you want to dream about a better social health care system you have a better chance of being struck by lighting. You cannot depend on Government for everything this is a very debilitating mentality among Tobagonians. You must do for yourself Start a Not For Profit to help the hospital get things they need if you are passionate about these things. Do what the private citizens did for the retirement home. When Government support was woeful for the retirees who did not have anybody to care for them, then private citizen acted and made it better.

Empathy to the girl who lost her baby in such a tramatic manner. It's great, however to read all these comments that is giving light to the problems in Tobago health care system. I lost a sister to the same incompetent care from medical staff at Scarborough Hospital. I BELIEVE my sister would have been aalive today if basic standard policies are in place. Example, Cat Scan for severe headache of unknow origin,or for who has other health complication such as hypertension, diabetes or cardiac history. It is unaacceptable to delay such test because the maachine is privately owned and cannot be used. Many people died in Tobago hospitals daily that would otherwise be saved with the adequate healthcare, accurate assessment and diagnostic test. However, there seem to be re-organization in the healthcare system. Let's hope it's for the best.

This is crazy! I don't care what system or what government you work under. If you are a medical professional you are obligated to care for the patient. Whether home or abroad, patients have a right to be treated promptly and with dignity. People has to be triaged according to the nature and urgency of the emergency. It doesn't matter what kind of healthcare system you have. If the staff is not committed to providing proper care we have a problem. The big difference is that in the US, because the bottom line is so adversely affected people will get fired for their indifference. In T&T people do not care because there are no consequences. It is not only in healthcare, it seems to be everywhere. You go to an office, same difference, like you are begging for something. I know it is tough feeling overworked and underpaid. But if you pass your distress to patients and treat them with indifference you are not making a case for better pay. You are just saying that you should be fired.
