Tobago Heritage Festival 2011 – Inside the journey

Villages participating in the Tobago Heritage Festival 2011, are now smiling as they received the first tranche of cheques from the Tobago Festivals Commission. On Monday, Wendell Berkley, Chairman of the Tobago Heritage Festival Committee, distributed cheques to the representatives of Black Rock, Canaan/Bon Accord, Les Coteaux, Mason Hall, Moriah, Pembroke, Plymouth/Bethesda and SWUM.

The distribution of cheques followed a meeting where all the villagers gave the Festival Committee updates on the progress and the status of their presentations. Representatives from both the Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service and Police Service informed the meeting of some of the Personal and Public Safety guidelines necessary to ensure a safe and successful Tobago Heritage Festival.

This weekend, the excitement in the lead up and build- up of the 'Heritage Fever' will be heightened as the second round of the Folk Fiesta preliminaries continues. On Saturday, choirs will face off for spots in the Folk Fiesta finals scheduled for July 17, at the Cyd Gray Complex in Roxborough beginning at 3 pm. And on July 9, the last leg of the Folk Fiesta preliminaries will be held at Fairfield Complex from 2 pm and will feature the Dancers as they showcase their skills to earn their place at the Finals.

Calypsonians will also face the judges at the preliminary round of the Heritage Calypso Monarch which will take place on Saturday at 9 am at Fairfield Complex.

Calypsoes should reflect this year's theme of 'Celebrating the Journey, We Come From Far'.

All Calypsonians whether attached to a Calypso tent or unattached are invited to participate in the preliminaries.

However, only 10 calypsonians will be selected to vie for the coveted title of Heritage Calypso Monarch which takes place on July 16, at the Scarborough Esplanade from 8 pm. This show will feature a combination of Calypso and Pan.

"Miss Heritage Personality" vows to captivate this year's audience as nine beautiful ladies will compete for the title of Miss Heritage Personality on July 22, at the Cyd Gray Stadium, Roxborough from 8 pm.

These ladies have already concluded their Communications and Public Relations and Etiquette workshops.

They have also completed a cosmetology session with the representatives of Sacha Cosmetics and they have participated in one photo shoot held at the Fairfield Complex.

First Citizens, proud sponsor of the event provided the ladies with their branded T shirts. On Saturday, the ladies will carry out their Community work at the Sylphil Home of Love and the Ny Care Home for the Aged.

Their rehearsals are in progress and we will continue to follow them on their trail towards the night of the Miss Heritage Personality Show, 2011.

@Cow Heel Soup....what you want? The festival is for the people and they are participating. During this time many tourist both local and foreign visit the island. what is needed is a report on the revenu gained from the heritage festival, this way we will know if it is financially feasable and how we should go forward.

Heritage Festival is a cultural URP. It is just about eating a food. just watch them key players as they sink their snout in the trough. Twenety five years have gone, where have we reached? No one knows for sure , but all they would say is that we come from far.
