Stage set for Tobago Carnival

By Opoku Ware

The stage is set for a titanic clash of the Tobago mas bands on the streets of Tobago on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Krystoff Alfred who levels the 2011 Tobago Band of the Year will be giving all out to hold the coveted title.

His presentation for 2012 is supernova and the Mt Pleasant based band has been busy over the last few months preparing for the 2012 battle of Tobago mas bands.

However, the reigning mas band champions will be up against some stiff competition from the 'Roxborough Invasion'. Lindy Davidson led mas band was the Tobago Champion mas band for a number of years until last year. Lindy's band always received its biggest challenge from her first cousin and rival band leader Lue Ann Melville.

Also, coming out of Roxborough, Lue Ann has been producing the largest mas band for the past five years. The fierce rivalry between Lue Ann and Lindy in the Band of the Year competition has helped them to strive for excellence in their mas productions.

The return of Krystoff Alfred to the competition and the emergence of the creative Avion Gordon, while the persistent efforts of Fantasia Mas Productions should add mosre 'fire' to the Band of the Year competition.

Meanwhile the Scarborough Jouvert is expected to be action packed with Jouvert bands converging on the capital from as early as 4 am on Carnival Monday. 'Jungle Winers' from Pleasant Prospect is expected to shake up Scarborough.

The Band's leader is Ricardo Maximin while Veeneta Kaiser is one of the main coordinators of the band.

George Leacock Radio Tambrin's Jouvert presentation is 'Toating Feelings' and they will be looking to represent Scarborough with pride. According to reliable reports the much anticipated battle for the Tobago Jouvert King will reach a climatic point when multi Jouvert King winners George Leacock and Ronald Henry clash in the competition at Market Square early on Monday morning.

However, Opoku Ware who is set to make a return to the competition claims to have a 'bomb shell' of a character to upset the two great Jouvert Kings Leacock and Henry.

Carnival action will also take center stage at Roxborough from Carnival Saturday night. Crown Point will stage its Jouvert celebrations on Carnival Monday while the Tobago All Stars Calypso Tent will be setting up a soca /calypso stage opposite the Port to bring on the action whenever there is a lull in the Parade of the Bands.
