Designs for a proposed plan by the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) to beautify the beachfront of Charlotteville are now available online. The designs were posted by the Charlotteville Beach Front Movement (CBFM), a group formed on Facebook, the very popular social media website recently.
Since the controversial beautification plan was presented at a town meeting organised by the THA in the remote seaside village community several weeks ago, the issue has generated a heated debate. The residents are now split over the proposed development in the community.
The CBFM group was created and has to date attracted close to three hundred members who contribute to the raging debate each day. According to one member, the group was formed as an interest group agitating to prevent destruction of our uniquely beautiful natural environment with which the village has been blessed and which attracts the visitors from all over the world! Any "development" must be in sync with that - preservation of our Natural Treasure at all costs," declared the member.
As expected, the designs submitted by Urbasys Ltd, on its website www.eyescreamanimation.com, have been attracting a sustained level of condemnation from CBFM members.
One member posted the following: "OMG (Oh My God) – That monster destroys the uniqueness and beauty of our tiny fishing village. It is so ugly, it would cause the loss of the most beautiful anchorage in the Caribbean that Charlotteville now enjoys among many sailors and tourists."
Well-known environmentalist and a key member of CBFM Patricia Turpin in a decisive post on the group's page pointed out that based on information from the Environmental Management Agency (EMA) the designs are yet to be submitted for approval.
"The EMA has informed me that no new development plan including the one that we have all been admiring has been submitted to them, neither has any Certificate of Environmental Clearance (CEC) been granted," stated Turpin.
Newly appointed Secretary for Agriculture, Marine Affairs and the Environment Gary Melville is yet to make a statement on the proposed development plans for Charlotteville.
When contacted, Area representative Tracey Davidson-Celestine said the views expressed on the Facebook page do not represent the general views of residents there. She promised to give a more definitive statement on the issue by the next issue.

Right on P R . Quality of life issues are what needs to be addressed. This so called tourism interest is a sham of a reason to build a glass tower. Charlotteville is dying of pollution and disregard to the environment. Besides poor water quality people still steal sand from the beaches, pitch empty bottles into the sea, and of course THA dump sites are not help either. Where has Town and Country Planning been all of this time, should they not have a look, are they not supposed to be experts (I know don't laugh). Have a few planners with their rendition of an improved C'ville so we can see benefits of each. This is a permanent decision so let us have a say and we can all vote on it, and not be told by our representative that is what you will be getting! Let's Go C'ville!!!

God have mercy on Tobago, I wonder who, sits at home have absolutely nothing to do but to find a way how to further waste Tobago's people money, You guys in C/Ville dont need that building, i'm sure it has more urgent matter to be address, like build railings on that swerving road to come in to C/Ville and fix that road in speyside. There is so much more important things to be done with that money. Am sure when or if that building starts you'll here so much corruption being heard during its construction. Yet again take note its your own people thats on a quest to cun you or better yet enslave you. Stand up for better healthcare, road infrastructure, proper building codes, better reacreational facilities, this will foster a better more intelligent community.

I was once told that when Eric Williams decided to buy a passenger boat to transport Tobago people (especially), between the islands they get vex.Nonetheless, he went ahead and baught the boat. When he came to to Tobago to commission the boat, he asked the people what they had to say...there was silence. When they finally broke the silence they said the boat was too small. But it is just to show how our people are hard to please and doh what dey want.Incidentally those boats were the Bird of Paradise and Scarlet Ibis.

You know a lot of you people are so full of sh..Who's "view" is the building blocking?Based on the description of the building of the picture, the building is on the opposite side of the beach, facing the beach.Yes Charlotville is a fishing village,so does that mean that it must stay ancient or primitive for the sake of some tourist who are "fascinated" by it?It is so darm mind-bugling that there are some primitive thing people who believe it must just stay the same way the probably born and met it.It's a reminder of the big "halabaloo" over the moving of Cabin Pub from Scarborough, just cuz some think was a "landmark".What is certain is that after consultation with the people OF CHARLOTTEVILLE, the building will be built and this foolish noise will subside and many may more than well be impressed. If not, then bun it down.

The building looks great but not with the glass facing the sun. How is this building going to cool when the electricity goes which happens a lot? How are we going to protect the glass from being broken since this is the area where we have a lot of street parties? I think the government didn't really look at C/ville before they come up with this building proposal. I believe the government needs to put up a T&Tect sub-station in the C/ville area because there is always a low voltage or loss of electricity in the area- so much for speaking about the amount of money that was spent at Cove telling us about 2020 vision and electricity.

"Equal rights" if you think that the Buccoo facilities are underutilized, then why not rent it for some events?I'm sure you won't be refused. You can even stage some goat races, but make sure you charge a fee so that both you and the THA can make some money. How often is any of the stadia in the country utilized? How often are games played at Wembly per year?I don't know where you get this dotish notion that the THA is supposed to have events there EVERY WEEK or day or month. You continue to look for all sorts of stupid arguments to pin against the THA.Here it is the THA is building proper fishing facilities with ACs and stainless steel fittings for the fishermen to avoid the roadside vending and they're objecting. Now WHAT THE HELL DO TOBAGONIANS WANT??? Everything must just remain the same way, nothing must change. It's no wonder why the accepted the island the way it was during the Robbie, Denoon and Charles era,no significant changes. Now they want the island to stay 3rd world.God help us

An eyesore is what it is. There are other places to put something like that up. The junction of the gas station where the Jim and Paul's fishery used to stand. Perhaps that is where the new gas station should be placed and not a fire station. The fire station can be placed back and out of the way as it does not have to be a monument taking up so much space like Roxborough. The new building should be in line with old tyme architecture with spires and everything as not to block views or light or a breeze off the ocean. Big glass windows would me noise pollution from the air conditioners that will be necessary to cool it. Charlotteville is a basic fishing village that someone would like to see since the do not exist anywhere else in Tobago. You wonder if the architect had ever visited to see what the village is all about. Our local rep. wants what she wants, or is told what "she" wants to happen. There is no opportunity of choice, as many are apathetic to political decisions.

don't even give charlottesville a second thought; getting to it is the biggest pain imaginable and it should be left as a 'third world' area onto which tourists can gaze and realise how life was pre-pirates/belafonte. probably still has dinosaurs there. all development will start at crown point and embrace all villages that show a willing to work towards a better tomorrow, for TOBAGO!

Can this Pnm Control THA explain to us in the name of God how can replacing this part of our culture with this Concrete two story structure restaurant with a walk over,`be useful to us.

This building suits an urban setting, and does not reflect the characteristics of Charlotteville which is a rural village. I am proud of the people of Charlotteville and advice them stand up for your rights. Too often these so called architects design buildings without doing site visits and analysis, a building should reflect the surroundings and the culture not something that drop out of space. That building will take away from the beauty of C’ville and too often politicians think that they can give us anything and we must accept it. This is 2011 where people are educated where people have travelled all over the world. We can do much better than that. Keep it up Charlotteville don’t give up the fight.

The point is, many of you bloggers don't live hare but always have a lot to say. The same way you, "equal rights", have a problem with me bashing and dissing, is the same way you and others like you continually bash the present THA regime. We must all have equal rights to say how we feel, if it's about rights, according to you.If you're fair and honest with yourself you'd see straight through the writer of the article.I make ABSOLUTELY no apology for my comments.I say them how I see them. The fact is that there are mixed views from the people of Charlotville, but what is highlighted by the writer are mainly the views of those against. The fact is also, that the people OF CHARLOTVILLE were consulted, but some of them prefer to see it remain the same. Our people are some of the hardest to please, it's always a case of darm if you do, darm if you don't.The people of Buccoo, more importantly, and many Tobagonians are pleased with the facalities there, but you are "bashing and "dissing" it.

They dont need any super structure in that place all they need are decent sale outlets constructed of voncrete to with stand hurricanes and open green spaces to permit relaxation.
72664147VKennedy said on Saturday, Aug 20 at 5:54 PM
The buildings should be constructed mainly of hurricane resistant glass with hurricane shutters which could be deployed when needed. The glass will maintain a great percentage of the sea view and would not appear too heavy thereby distorting the skyline.Vkennedy

Adamsom Charles is such a bias, nasty so-called journalist. Clearly, the man has an agenda, there's always some nasty motive behind his articles as they relate to the PNM. He never made a story out of Asworth million$$$$$$ house, never took a picture of it, nor did he write the story about Vernalla and her husband duping a cultural group into believing that they were to go to the UK to perform, then fooling them by saying that the THA didn't give them any money". They had the people showed up at the airport TWICE. It took a reporter from TRINIDAD to reveal this dishonesty in the T&T Mirror. Not "Derson Charles" (Adamson Charles)who writes for the same newspaper. What did Vernella say? "It wasn't me".

Whose bright idea was this? Granted a new facility might be warranted there is no reason why the thing must stick out like a sore thumb in the otherwise clean, green and serene village. Where are the designs that are at one with the locale? How can we be serious about tourism, even eco-tourism, if we insist that ugly new buildings are best for our tourism push. Exhibit A you ask? The Buccoo facility. It completely destroyed the stunning view of the bay as you entered the village. Let's learn from this experience and NOT do it again!
