Police to seek advice from DPP on Green's case

By Elizabeth Williams

August 1 marked the two years since British couple Peter and Murium Green were brutally attacked at their Bacolet home back in 2009. Since then their lives have never been the same with Mrs. Green having to endure several reconstructive surgeries to her face.

"The past two years have been a constant struggle to get to terms with our disfigurements. Murium has been having to have reconstructive surgery and will have another operation on the 9th Aug 2011. It has taken two years of her life combined with the entire trauma associated with such a horrific attack," Peter Green said.

Deputy Police Commissioner Mervyn Richardson when contacted on the matter said a way forward on the matter will be known in the shortest possible time.

"It is my intention to visit the Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard this week for further instructions on the matter, and this is all I will like to say on the matter at this time," Richardson noted.

Peter Green expressed disappointment that they have had time to ask for updates on several occasions. This, he said, began with the care they received during the initial stages after their attack.

"My main disappointment was the loss of my left eye. On my return to the UK my ophthalmic surgeon informed me after an examination that had he worked on my eye in the early stages after our attack he could well have saved my sight. As disappointed as I was with this I did begin to accept it."

However, after investigations into his medical report from Trinidad and Tobago, he discovered that he had been booked to see an ophthalmic surgeon for treatment in Trinidad but nursing staff on his ward at Mt. Hope Medical forgot to take him to his appointment.

"By the time a new appointment was made it was the same day as my departure back to the UK. By this time the eye muscles had relocated to another part of my orbit making vision impossible. We both had medical insurance cover of 10 million Trinidad and Tobago dollars each," Green said.

To the best of his knowledge no application has been made to their insurance company for the costs of their care in Port of Spain.

"Sadly this situation smells more of damage limitation to the tourist trade than the welfare of the victim. In the UK we have a victim support officer."

Murium and Peter still suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome and continue to take counselling.

"When she felt her face to locate where she was bleeding, her hand went behind her facial features. As you may well know she held her face with one hand while crawling to the road on the other. It is a nightmare we will never be able to forget."

As for him, Green said he has not regained any feelings to the left side of his body and still finds it hard to shave, clean his teeth or eat.

"I have developed tinnitus due to the head blows received, a continuous ringing in my ears. I now have to wear hearing aides which reduces some of the ringing. I do continue to exercise every day but further improvement from now on is, I am told, very unlikely. Our lives have been changed forever and further travel will not be an option due to two fragments of bone that remain lodged in my brain and will remain a threat to me for the rest of my life."

He also expressed disappointment with the lack of communication from the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

"I believe the government does not know how to handle our situation as we are still alive. They had only dealt with body bags up until then. We have never received even a letter asking about our health from any of your top politicians. Just one kind word from them would have helped us understand we were not alone. All we ever read was statements to the press from T&T when we began to ask questions about our future needs."

"Our biggest sorrow is we will never visit Tobago again. Emancipation Day, 1/8/2011 was the second anniversary of our attack. This day will never have the same compassion as it did prior to 1/8/2009," Peter concluded.

If there was any DNA or fingerprints recovered by police, wich i doubt they did, since bago police is highly incompetent, it would be easy task to find the assailant. Test everyone, 50000 people in bago only. No big deal!

We still do not know what was the cause of this attack, untill the entire story is told to the public, its very difficult for anyone of us to cast any blame on the way the police is handling this situation. Tourist are not always as innocent as everyone is in someway our the other proclaming.ther are many crimes in England that is not beign solved ,i dont hearb anyone saying that theyn would never visit England.Who are the greens and what do they want, they have an insurance then the insurance can pay for whatever hospital expenses is necessary. They are alive ,they still have each other, they have food on there table. why do you people insist on blackening Tobago for an incident that happens in many other countries. Whoever it is that injured them if its possible would be dealt with. so leave tobago alone. My concern is what caused this person to act as he or she did.And if there was another way he could have dealt with the situation
