Trinidad and Tobago has been voted the world's best tourist destination! This was announced on October 9, when tourism organisations from 27 European Union member states voted unanimously and under the favourite cultural area theme the Tobago Heritage Festival and Tobago Fest were mentioned.
Pigeon Point Heritage Park was voted the best "All-day-long beach facility" by the world acclaimed Islands Magazine which did an international survey of island facilities of this type. Tobago also got a National Trust Award.
There are bigger and better things planned for the Pigeon Point Heritage Park, as you can browse on the cnngo.com site, that Pigeon Point is number 50 of the world's best beaches. Part of the article says:
"The smaller of the two main islands that make up the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, 41-kilometre-long Tobago boasts an endless procession of gorgeous beaches. The crowning glory is Pigeon Point. Here, what is reportedly the world's most photographed jetty juts out into the glistening sea. The beach is carpeted with powdery white sand, perfect for beach volleyball. In the distance, almond and coconut trees sway in the breeze."
Chairman of the Pigeon Point Heritage Park Dr. James Armstrong said several of the future plans in the making for Pigeon Point include the heritage art exhibition, a heritage confectionary establishment, the heritage art gallery and the present implementation of a nature trail.
"All these projects will be established at Pigeon Point but maintaining the natural ambiance of the park. For example the nature trail will see a wide species of birds and a variety of flora and fauna. While a facility for wedding, anniversaries, christenings and other events is to be established," Dr. Armstrong said.
Dr. Armstrong said Pigeon Point is expected to play a catalytic role since the park has a captured clientele of about 200,000 persons per year.
"We are expanding the south beach area with facilities to accommodate more weddings. This niche has grown at Pigeon Point significantly over the last two years. The north beach area has already been expanded and a new change/toilet facility was opened a few weeks ago. This expansion is to continue with various sporting activities," he said.
Dr. Armstrong said, consideration is also being given to the reactivation of the sailing school for youngsters from Tobago. In addition the Tourism and Transport Division recently added a new life guard tower and plans are in place for expanding the present life guard facilities.

I am a tobagonian who happens to live and work in Thailand which happens to be a major tourist destination. Tourism has dropped significantly in 3-5 years.People simply got less cash in their wallets and purses.Of course catastrophes and crimes generally result in a decrease in numbers when it comes to Tourists.I think a combination of factors has contributed to the debated decline.

i keep coming to Tobago since 1993, things have changed! i feel sorry for my Tobagonian friends who run little businesses, because they do depend on tourism. But Pigeon Point as "World best Tourist Destination" make me just laugh. It's a nice beach-no doubt- but as long as i have to pull my beach chair by myself through the sand - pigeon point can't be in competiton with Real World Best Tourist Destinations! Most Local People try their best to make tourist comfortable, but if authorities and politicians are just stobbern, blind and ignorant- tourist will stay away because they get better value for their money on different islands or countries. the immigration officer and customs officer, we tourist meet first, with the miserable faces, they forget that it is the tourist who give them basicly a job. no tourist, these ppl. would not be needed!! a smile and a welcome do not cost anything! well, there is much more to write, but no space! i just hope Condor does not stop flying to Tobago!!!

When will the Tobagans admit they live in one of the most dangerous places in the caribbean, life has no meaning to most that dwell there,Tourists have spoken by staying away , even Charlottville is hurting , plus it is a nasty place to vacation, food in shops are low, whites are ignored when the try to buy food , tobago is not cheap , service is rotten people are lazy , hotels are dirty, and last of all you are not wanted , the killings will go on of expats and tourists , there is no hope for tobago, Trinidad would be better off with out them ,Go Trinadad .

Pigeon Point is the most commercialised beach in Tobago, why would anyone go there when there are so many lovely beaches without the tourist dross. If we want more tourists sort out the arrivals procedeure at the air port!

Most of the comments are very wrong, re why tourism is down in Tobago..... Do you actually know how expensive it is to fly there from England???? There is a recession , its got nothing to do with crime/policing/people, its all about money... Pigeon point is a nice beach, but it doesnt have anything on cotton bay, there is a true jewel of Tobago.. I would be back if airfares were cheaper.

the funny thing is that it was voted by an organization that dont have visitors to Tobago. this is a clear tha bribe, bought by money that supposed to help to promote the island. Tobago has been abused by THA promotion board so many years. Anselm and Orville do NOT want tourism in Tobago. If they did the Cove would not been the no 1 development issue. its a joke!!!

I do understand why it has and is taking Tobago so long to develop it's tourism industry. What have these people in the THA been doing and what about the money, where is it going. We do not even have decent street signs and in most instances, none at all. How, tourism unfriendly. How about putting up some colorful street signs in the shape of birds, plants or animals with vibrant colors like orange and yellow, mixed with green, blue, white and red. Put some local artist to work. May the place look bright and colorful. No charge for the suggestion.

Pigeon Point Heritage Park was held accountable by the T&T courts for the negligence from protecting bathers from speeding pirogues. Many of those accidents have happened. After five years thge THA still fights against that court sentence, and the dismissed appeal. The families of the victims have not received any compensation so far. This is case is costing double amount of money to the taxpayers. They cannot refloat that place while the case be open. There is always travelling magazines and tourism websites where the public can learn exactly what had happened and some pictures to look at to make up their minds if they are deciding whether to go to Pigeon Point Beach.

Nature trail ? Sounds dangerous. I wouldn't go on a nature trail in that area without a loaded gun. Surely would not allow a loved one that is on vacation to go for a walk in any remote area of Tobago. That is the reality that has come to be in Tobago. There is not a proper police force nor a functional criminal system. The people do not hold there wrong doers accountable.

Just like Coco Reef being voted the best hotel in the Caribbean. Hasn't anyone seen Sandy Lane in Barbados. Wake up T H A you have wrecked international tourism in Tobago.

Tobago is our land for which we are proud. Forget the ratings every rating agency and individuals will produce their own scores. The POINT about it is that Pigeon Point is a very very nice place and its in the hands of Tobagonians. So lets pay our just due to contribute its maintenance. Many would prefer to drink a set of rum rather than paying to go to Pigeon Point. Hide behid the gape trees to chang their clothes and do their numbers in the water. forget people like PIG POINTLESS a pig has no place in Pigeon Point, he/she prefers a pig pen . Tobagonians big up up your island and make meaningfull suggestions for improvements. G ood work JIM keep it up . Its nice to see people of the spoilmaking a meaningfull contribution to their homeland.

I'm always wary about these rankings.Who's doing them and what's their vested interest. Some time ago while looking at the Travel Channel's rating of the best caribbean beaches I saw what I couldn't believe,Big Englishman's Bay on the northwestern coast of Tobago being rated as the 5th best.I know every square inch of that beach and also know at least 6 other beaches in Tobago that should rank higher than the aforementioned, much less in the caribbean.Nonetheless,if the Pigeon Point ranking is objective and correct, then kudos to that organization I'll include that beach in my itinerary on my next trip to Tobago later this Fall. Keep it up Jim Armstrong and others.

the beach is a dangerous spot, known for the filth that hangs out there, the assaults on any human, rapes robbery, this article is ridiculous and misleading , most of which intelligent readers will ignore, just to have printed it was a violation of trust to any unsuspecting visitor , how ever this article is for readers of tobago ,the European community is not so easy fooled ,some day TnT may reach this lofty hight, sadly not for many years,

Do we really still have a Tobago Fest? If one really wants to know which island is voted best tourist destination , one must follow the tourist dollar. The tourist vote with their cash and the island making the most money from tourism is best in their view. Using this yard stick where does Tobago really lie? There is a lot of work to be done here before we could say we on the “top” so let us not be fool by these nonsense awards.

What the article doesn't tell you is that Islands Magazine mentioned Tobago in a 2010 article and cnngo.com is actually aimed at the Far Eastern reader and Pigeon Point is mentioned as number 50 of 50. There is a link to simplytobago.com which is a UK based advertising company. I wonder who pays for all this drivel?
