Only Tobago Chalkie in 50th anniversary competition

Alex Gift aka Tobago Chalkie was the only Tobago calypsonian selected by the national judges for the semi-finals of the 50th anniversary Independence Calypso competition. The audition for the Tobago artistes was held last week Tuesday at the Fairfield Complex.

Eleven Tobago singers faced the judges while over 160 singers in Trinidad were also judged for the competition. In Tobago, there were solid renditions from Tobago Rio, Calypso Prince and Ware. However, in the end it was Gift who had an excellent rendition who was the only Tobagonian who the judges felt had done enough to move forward in the competition.

One of the Tobago competitors questioned the competence of the judge noting that some of the selections rendered by the Tobago singers were far superior that some of those selected in Trinidad. "It is like they picking singers by name and not by song", he said.

Meanwhile, there may be a lifeline for the Tobago calypsonians who faced the judges as TUCO Tobago has submitted proposals for a competition entitled 'Independence Through The Eyes of The Tobago Calypsonian' to be staged in Tobago to commemorate the 50th Independence anniversary.

The eleven Tobago calypsonians eligible for the competition are Alex Gift, Shamika Denoon, Caston Cupid, Delanie Baynes, Prince, Tobago Rio, Jerry Combie, Anthony Washington and Ware.
