I will defend THA, says Chief Secretary

Chief Secretary Orville London has said if it means he has to defend the Tobago House of Assembly in the court of law, he will do it.

London, speaking at a press conference on Monday said while he is very appreciative of Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, and members of her cabinet, many of the statements made about the new Scarborough Regional Hospital, the housing situation in Tobago, and constitutional reform over the weekend retreat, were misleading to the general public, and sent the wrong signals.

"Anytime that I feel that anything is done that affects the THA and it is illegal, I have a responsibility to get the courts of law to clarify it," London said.

London said he has no problem with an investigation into any project in Tobago, but the truth of these projects must be told.

What exactly is meant by full autonomy and full self governance for Tobago? Secession? How practical is that? And what will be primary driver of the economy be tourism? When all we offer tourists are expensive run down buildings masquerading as hotels? How about agriculture...when it is well known that all we do is import food? How are we going to provide tertiary education for our children when we do not have a proper library or a developed telecommunications infrastructure which allows for a high level of broadband penetration? Lets be practical secession is not a viable option. We all agree that Tobagonians have suffered at the hands of Central Government but that is no reason to become melodramatic. By all means pursue reform of the THA Act and push for the elimination of the Ministry of Tobago affairs. Focus on developing the infrastructure on the island and encouraging Tobagonians abroad to return. Lets work towards development instead of pontificating on the impractical.

Mr. London should ask himself. What enhancement of the legal legs of the THA has he done since being the Chief.

During the past two years, the former PM did not attend any of the campaign meetings of the PNM for the THA Elections neither did he attend the swearing in ceremony.....very strange or deliberate; what was his reason? There are too many matters to be cleared by the Chief Secretary surrounding his administration and its activities. Be careful as the skeletons (which you believe were destroyed) would surface.

"Fear None, Respect All. These were/are the words instilled in me by my mother and father." Tobago has never gotten the justifiable and equal share of the fiscal financial budget presented by any political party in power in more than 30 years. The budget presented to close out the first decade of the 21st century is a backlash to the social, cultural, and human capital. Tobagonians are treated as underclass human species by those you had the opportunity to lead the country with lack of respect and opportunities for the native citizens. This is why I belive that Tobago should once again pushed attain full autonomy and self-governance. Second class treatment is what Tobagonians are getting at this time, and hope that the citizens can stand up for independence from Trinidad. It is time to do so, it is the right, it is the time and ight call as we move into the second decade of the twenty-first century. May GOD bless TOBAGO. We deserve more and we need to go on our own.

The truth is that the project was managed by the Ministry of Health in Trinidad and the THA had little real control over the project. In any case again Tobago News the article is cryptic at best. What is the particular issue that he will take to court? Where is the background information on the issue...something to put the statement into context? Come on Tobago News do better.
