Minister of National Security and United National Congress Chairman Jack Warner was in Roxborough last Thursday night at a massive TOP political meeting in which the TOP presented the 12 candidates that will compete in the Tobago House of Assembly Elections on January 21.
Warner came by helicopter and landed in the field behind Cyd Gray car park while the meeting was underway.
The overflowing car park roared with cheers at his entrance and he came out in a TOP shirt to give his partners in government support. Jack was on a mission and based on his reception from TOP supporters he accomplished that – he hijacked the PNM’s campaign slogan – “In Defence of Tobago.”
Warner, acknowledging the fact that he was getting on fire when he said he is “now getting warm,” was the chief attack dog against the PNM led THA under Orville London of the night. Stating his regard and respect of the PP government for the autonomy of the TOP and all its other coalition members, Warner declared that the “time has come for the people of Tobago to rise up against the PNM.” Warner, in a prosecutorial manner, built a case accusing the PNM of “system sabotaging the development of Tobago,” then went on to laying out his case of why the PMN should be rejected at the polls on January 21.
“Defend against who and what” Warner said as he turned the argument around using the PNM’s own campaign slogan against them. The hijacking begun and Warner told the crowd that it was the “People’s Partnership that was standing in defence of Tobago.”
Included in Warner’s allegations against the PNM were:
The contingency fund. He referred to this as the “best kept secret.”
$84,000 to settle a private loan. Warner wondered for whom and why?
Auditor General Reports from 2003-2005, Warner stated that in the Auditor General reports were considered as “extra-ordinary activities.” Warner is looking forward to reports from 2006-2012.
Investment of TTD$2.5 million in a secret deal to Decipher Systems Caribbean Ltd. According to Warner, no share certificates were ever issued, an additional loan of $750,000. According to Warner, “3.25 million dollars, just so, and the money gone, no proof of anything.”
Investment of TT$5 million to wwautomotive Ltd.
Cost overruns and incomplete projects such as Shaw Park.
Furthermore Warner called out Opposition Leader Keith Rowley on being “an Indian lover in Trinidad and an Indian hater in Tobago,” in an attempt to remind the crowd of allegations of the PNM playing the race card in the election.
Keeping the issue of the Internal Self-Government and the Constitutional Amendment Bill on the forefront, Warner made mention of the fact that consultations were held earlier in the day in a 4 hour meeting before the Cabinet by Political Leader Ashworth Jack, to make final tweaks to the Bill before it is laid in Parliament.
Also attending the meeting were Minister of Justice Senator Christlyn Moore, Minister of Tobago Development Dr. Delmon Baker, & Minister in the Ministry of the People and Social Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin.
Within a week Kamla Persad Bissessar came followed by Jack Warner. Let me guess, is Anand Ramlogan going to get in on this too? If anything else can be said about the past historic week in the electoral politics of Tobago its:
The TOP is definitely a part of the Partnership Government.
The PP government is on the threshold of bringing the Constitutional Amendment Bill (in order to give Tobagonians Internal Self –Government) to the Parliament. This was a condition of the partnership, but the timing is being questioned by the PNM as politically motivated.
The Chief Secretary says his “challenge with the TOP,” is that they acting as “tools of the PP government.”
And finally, this week was a coordinated strategic move for the TOP to bring out its political guns, the Kamla and the Warner, as their tools.
Warner also told the crowd that there is more to come over the next few days before the elections.
