Govt explores sites for Integrated CampusThe Indian Point Estate of Lois D'or in Windward Tobago is being regarded as the front-runner for the location of the Tobago Integrated University Campus promised by the Peoples' Partnership government. Tobago News got word about this following a visit by a high-powered team to several different sites last week Saturday. The new integrated campus is expected to house three tertiary level institutions of Trinidad and Tobago namely: the University of the West Indies (UWI), the University of Trinidad & Tobago (UTT) and the College of Science Technology and Applied Arts of Trinidad & Tobago (COSTAATT). The sprawling picturesque estate was one of four locations toured by the high-powered team comprising of government ministers and university officials, who had earlier held a meeting to inaugurate a steering committee at the Tobago Technology Center in Canaan. Attending the meeting were Minister of Tertiary Education Science and Technology Fazal Karim, Minister for Tobago Development Vernella Alleyne-Pilgrim, Senator Terance Baynes and Minority Leader Ashworth Jack. The other sites visited were: the Ross Estate in Roxborough, the Diamond Estate in Lambeau and the Friendship Estate in Shirvan. Speaking at a lively opening of a new east office of the Tobago Organisation of the People (TOP) in Roxborough last Sunday, Jack pointed out that with the location of the university campus in the east, a number of business opportunity would become available for its residents. "Tobago east must develop just like Tobago west and Roxborough must be the second town of this island," he boomed to the cheering crowd. |

Given the logistics involved in moving people and goods and services to and from the proposed University coNsideration should be given to its location somwhere not to far from the end of the Highway on the Winward Road. Perhaps between Bacolet and Mt St George where you have easy access from the Windard. North Side Road via the link road Mason Hall/Hope. Also easy access from the West - Bon Accord, Plymouth,Scarborough Etc. These areas present a better demographic profile and accessibility than an isolated area as Louis D'or. Think again people. THINK DEVELOPMENT PLANNING NOT POLITICAL PLANNING. THINK. TRUE TOBAGONIAN I AGREE WITH YOU.

The idea is a good one to have a university facility built in T'GO. However, the site must be easily accessibly both in the dry and wet seasons.one has to think about landslides in the country, other people might be coming off work and need to get to class on time.Lowlands or Friendfield's are good sites for building.

Hey Citylimer, yet another good piece from you focusing on some of the critical issues for UT's viability and sustainabilty but please lighten-up on the constant "disrespect" bombardment,it's just seems lame now.Prosperity for Tobago is paramount.Understood! We'd have more than sufficient time later to talk as much as we'd want about "disrespect." If I believed the doctor might have disrespected me but his diagnosis and treatment of my ailment were extremely effective and I was recuperating faster than anticipated,I would deal with the so-called "disrespect" issue later when fully back on my feet.Right? Not while being treated and under his care.C'mon dude!

One time Tobago was known as the bread basket of the nation and this should be the position Tobago should aim for as a higher priority Tobago should be reviving Agriculture in an Organic sustainable way. Since that will be the trend of the future. The goal should be generate foreign dollars with local production and to be diversify enough to be self sufficient in Basic foods. Eating imported food is importing sickness- just read the labels

What are the demographics for the location of the University in Lois D'or. Are there supporting structures in the immediate environment to support it.Perhaps a more appropriate location with transportation availabilty and a sizeable local population which will attract supporting business to the area. Perhaps the Friendship Estate with a built up hinterland with already well established support services and an Industrial Estate soon to be completed would have been a more appropriate location. Air,sea, and an established road network are prerequisits for the establishment of such a facility. Part time job opportunites,on the job trainig, recreation and the like are already established. Is it a political decision based on constituency demographics or for bragging rights in the East and votes strategy. Yes a University in Tobago but for heaven's sake get it right. Is it a TOP/UNC University and not a University of Tobago. Where is the remit of the THA in all of this-blatant disrespect again

Now imagine this, a "high powered team" went visiting sites to build this University, but check it out, there was no representative of the THA among the "high powered team", which included (who else?) Asworth Jack. Unless they are building the University on private land owned by some TOP somebody, they could be high or low they CANNOT just move onto ahy STATE LAND here in Tobago and build ANYTHING, including a University. That is because STATE LANDS are the responsibility of the TOBAGO HOUSE of ASSEMBLY, not Ashworth not Vernella not Kazal or even Aunti Kamla. So all this gimmick in front of their frantic gullible and fanatical Yellow Brigade" is just a load of dog s@#t for people who are willing to eat it all. Let's wait and see when they will start and finish. But Kamla is MORE interested in the South University which could NEVER be more important than a University in Tobago.

This university can draw international students and bring in much needed revenue for Tobago. It will also help to put Tobago on a level playing feel with its other Carribean neighbours who already have universities.

A University for Tobago should've been a priority than the unnecessary one they're planning to build in South Trinidad. After two years, this is looking like the first major construction to happen in Trinidad, but it should NOT be a priority, but only Kamla knows why she so desperately want to start and finish it with such a haste. Meanwhile, according to the article Jack was once again in a meeting with government ministers to discuss building University, but where was the Secretary of Education in the THA? When Christine Kangaloo was the Tertiary Education Minister she named the Friendship Estate as the site, but them and dey "high-powered team" like "Miss Howard Cat" looking all over the place for a site, these people are just a bunch of...
