Dengue fever cases risingThere are more cases of dengue fever being admitted to the Scarborough Regional Hospital on a daily basis, but the health authorities have refused to release information to the media and by extension, the public. Sources said from May 1 to the end of July there have been an increase in cases. During a press conference on July 26 the Tobago Regional Health Authority admitted there was an outbreak of the fever in Tobago but has not released any further information. It was said then that there were 159 cases reported and 55 were declared positive from the initial rapid test done in Tobago. Reliable sources have revealed that the Public Health Laboratory in Trinidad have confirmed 36 cases in Tobago in recent days. As a result more doctors are needed at this time to assist in dealing with the number of dengue cases at the hospital where some of the persons were being treated in the Wards with other patients. Sources said more doctors were needed to work in the emergency room, as the situation at this time was challenging, adding that the TRHA was looking towards getting work permits for doctors with the necessary qualifications to meet the demand at the hospital. Health officials are asking persons who may be experiencing dengue symptoms to also seek assistance from their private doctor where necessary. Public Health Inspector Lois Solomon said fogging and spraying exercises were continuing across Tobago. |
