Couple: Nurses injured baby

By Elizabeth Williams

In a statement the authority said the baby's condition was known as "Amniotic Band Syndrome", a congenital disorder caused by the entrapment of fetal part in fibrous amniotic bands while in uteri.

It explained that the Amniotic Band Syndrome occurred due to a partial rupture of the amniotic sac causing fibrous bands that can encircle and trap some part of the fetus. Later, as the fetus grows but the bands do not, the bands become constricting. Amniotic bands can also sometimes attach to the face or neck causing deformities such as cleft lip and palate. If the bands become wrapped around the head or umbilical cord it can be life threatening for the fetus, the TRHA said.

The baby in question, Jayden Collette was born to Mona Walters and William Collette with a scar and a bump on his forehead. Walters told the Tobago News in an interview that nurses at the hospital said her amniotic sack in which the fetus develops in amniotes had cut her baby's face. The baby was delivered via caesarean section. This was her 5th child.

"When I came from the theater and I came downstairs, they brought him to my bed and this is what I see, a cut on his face. I never saw the doctor who did the caesarean until the Friday morning. When he came on the Ward he asked me what happened to the child's face," Walters said.

Walters said her husband was left alone in a room before getting to speak to Hospital Medical Director Dr. Maria Dillon Remy about the incident, but did not get any reasonable answers.

"He went to the doctor on Tuesday and showed her the photograph of the child. The doctor said it was not her call and something like that she was going with what the nurses told her and walked out of the room, leaving my husband," Walters related.
