Land titles in Tobago took center stage on Friday as Attorney General Anand Ramlogan paid a courtesy call on Chief Secretary Orville London, at his Calder Hall Office. Both men spoke with members of the media, following a tour of the video conferencing facility at the Scarborough Prison and the Scarborough Magistrates' Court.
Ramlogan invited London to write to him on the issuing of land titles that affected hundreds of Tobago landowners and promised that the matter will be discussed with the Chief Parliamentary Council. He said when legislation was agreed upon it will be taken to the Parliament as a matter of urgency.
In response London said: " I think this is very welcomed news for us here in Tobago, because it means if that happens and the legislation is passed, that we will be in a position to hopefully bring some comfort to those Tobagonians who have problems with security of land tenure," London said.
Ramlogan said there were many problems in Tobago which have been left unresolved for far too long and land titles was one such matter.
"I intend to look at the legislation and see if I am in agreement with the policy. If changes need to be made, I shall review it, but it is a matter of utmost priority for this administration," Ramlogan said.
On the subject of constitutional reform, Ramlogan said the Government was committed to bring the necessary legislation to the Parliament. He said: "As part of the process of constitutional reform, we will embark on a review of the relationship and the legislation with respect to Tobago, because we believe that Tobago should be given a priority that's in our legislative agenda," Ramlogan said.
Asked to comment on when Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar will meet with London, Ramlogan said at this time he did not see any breach in diplomatic protocol.
"The THA of course occupies a special unique place in the protocol order and at the appropriate time I believe the Honorable Prime Minister will meet with the Chief Secretary," he said.
