The Westmooring student who was on board the boat Indigo caught the biggest blue marlin in the history of the tournament on the final day of fishing after the first two days was a disaster because of windy conditions, inclement weather and rough seas.
However, on the final day, it was a completely different story as the fishes were biting and the youthful angler took approximately one hour and four minutes to coax the 890lb blue marlin unto his uncle's boat using an 80 pound line test.
He was rewarded with a cash prize of $415,000 for his achievement. He was awarded $100,000 for breaking the existing blue marlin record that was 644 lbs and $315,000 for catching a blue marlin over 899 lbs.
Marlon Sheppherd who heads the tournament committee noted that the fish was 11ft 3 inches long and its girth was 6 feet. The fish is about twice the height and about six times the weight of the teenager.
United States judge Bill Rewalt who was at the tournament will relay the information to the International Game Fishing Association for verification to determine if it is a world junior record and for certification. However, it is definitely a National and Caribbean Open record.
Twenty-eight boats with 128 anglers aboard including 10 juniors and two females, one of which is a junior, participated in the tournament that was shifted from its traditional fishing ground in Crown Point to Charlotteville.
